This popular school snack and its name are presumed to have originated in the 1950s.

The classic peanut butter version of Ants on a Log is recommended as a healthy snack by health professionals. The fun name and simple flavour appeals to children. And of course, a snack that contains any veggies and some protein – is a winning combination in our book.

Cut 2 small celery stalks into half strips. Spread thick with 2 tbs peanut butter. Use creamy-soft peanut butter for easier spreading. Top with a handful of raisins.

You could also experiment with carrot sticks, papaya strips, bananas, sliced apples or bell peppers instead of celery sticks. And cranberries, olives, chopped fruit, blueberries or chocolate chips instead of raisins. And cream cheese, Ricotta cheese, Greek yoghurt or Hummus, instead of peanut butter.

The kids will love it.
