Renowned Indian women’s right activist Mary Roy has died. She was 89 years old.
The Indian educator is known for winning a Supreme Court lawsuit in 1986 against the gender biased inheritance law prevalent within the Syrian Malabar Nasrani community of Kerala.
In 1960, Ms. Roy sued her brother George Isaac to gain equal access to the property of her deceased father. After 39 long years’ battle the case was finally settled in favour of Mary Roy in 2009.
Mary Roy is the mother of Booker Prize winner Arundhati Roy.
Roy founded the Corpus Christi High School in Kottayam in 1967, later renamed Pallikoodam.
