Mum life: sweet or bitter?

Since inception of creation of man, a woman is designed to fill an enviable vacuum in God’s own plan for human race. She is a good product of God’s good thoughts toward mankind ; Genesis 2:18.

Like the first woman, Eve, every woman is designed to be a mother in the real sense of the word. Genesis 3:20 reads, “And Adam called his wife’s name Eve ; because she was the mother of all living.

A mother of all living cares for all living things around her. As a mother in a home, she cares for all human being in her household as well as all pets. Do you know what? A mother does not fail to care for every flower and trees. These trees may be fruit bearing or for decoration. Proverbs 31:14-16 describes a good mother thus,

“She is like the merchants’ ship ; she bringeth her food from afar
She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her
household, and a portion to her maiden’s.
She considereth a field, and buyeth it : with the fruit of her
hands she planteth a vineyard. ”

To appreciate a mother’s value in the affairs of every living, a day has been set apart to celebrate her. It does not matter whether it is observed in March or May. It is the same personality who is held in high esteem that is celebrated.

Let me not fall to call your attention to another dimension introduced into motherhood.

What can this be? Bitterness it is! How did this come into being. The failure of the first mother, Eve, into the antics of Satan, the Devil, in Genesis chapter three marks the starting point. Adam was the first man she took care of him but she introduced sin into his life, then things fell apart and the centre fails to hold since then. Every living things and even non-living thing paid (and still pays) dearly for this great “mistake”.

Since then, there have always been two types of mothers, sweet and bitter mothers. They exist everywhere! Yet, both must be celebrated, after all, they both served as a bridge through whom certain folks came into existence. They are to be celebrated also for sparing the lives of their children.

To God be the glory, I am one of the people who not only understand a little about a sweet mother but also a beneficiary of sweet motherhood.

I will be an ingrate if I celebrate her once in a year. I celebrate her daily even at death. She, my mother, was a supporter of all that I have ever achieved,. Not only this, she set the pace for all that I will ever become as designed by God. Her death has left a permanent scar in my heart. Only God can take care of this…She is worthy to be celebrated daily.

However, it is not everyone that is fortunate enough to have a sweet mother.

A brother’s recent experience that I am a witness of is a practical experience of someone who has a bitter mother.

What really happened?

I don’t know what had transpired between the mother and her firstborn son. The mother is so hardened that her son should not amount to anything in life. She preferred the prosperity of her younger children to that of the first son. She speaks evil and does anything evil to him. She has no hope in him. In every way, she is bitter to him. She has sealed the possibility of reaping anything good from him. She cannot pray for his good, no matter what happens.

Every attempt to ‘reconcile” her with the son proved unsuccessful.

Do you know what? This brother will ever speak glowing of his mother. One day he said in his mother latter days, he will care for her. He is prepared to accommodate her that he may have direct control over her welfare. I know that by the power of prayer and good deeds from the son, God, his Creator can bring a positive change. The brother is never happy at her behaviour toward her.

When the world celebrates International Mother’s Day every year, as a woman, can you say you are a sweet mother? Or can you be classified as a bitter one? Can your children call you their “sweet mother”? Proverbs 31:28 says,
“Her children rise up, and call her blessed ;her husband also, and he praiseth her.”

This is the portion of a sweet mother. Finally, “Give her of the fruit of her hands and let her own works praise her in the gates” Proverbs 31:31.

Stay blessed and prepared for the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.
