Naatu Naatu wins Golden Globe

Indian director SS Rajamouli’s hit period action movie RRR is in the news – for its song Naatu Naatu which bagged the Golden Globe award in the Best Original Song category.

At Wednesday’s Golden Globes, the song received its most visible American honour yet, beating heavyweights like Taylor Swift and Rihanna. The historical win put composer MM Keeravani straight into history books.

The film was also nominated in the Best Non-English Language Film category.

Written by Rajamouli, RRR, which stands for Rise, Roar, Revolt, is a historical fantasy that tells the rollicking story of two revolutionaries who fight against British rule in India – superstars Ram Charan and Jr NTR play the lead roles.

Indians across the world are celebrating the historic win at the global event.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) joined the bandwagon and congratulated the team for their big win. They even shared a video of Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann ‘dancing’ to Naatu Naatu.

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan wrote on Twitter that he “woke up and started dancing to Naatu Naatu” to celebrate the news.

Oscar-winning music composer AR Rahman called the win a “paradigm shift”.

Rajamouli along with his co-stars Ram Charan Tej and Jr NTR arrived at the ongoing 80th Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills, USA on Tuesday. Music composer MM Keeravani received the award, thanking Rajamouli and the cast.

The song was shot in front of the Mariinskyi Palace in Ukraine in 2021, months before the war began. The film’s director Rajamouli said in an interview that “luckily, they gave us permission to shoot because the Ukrainian president Mr Zelensky was a television actor”.

The idea was to create a song which took “enjoyment and joy” to a new level, the song’s composer Keeravani told BBC Telugu.
