Neymar paid for not talking faith

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) star Neymar receives €541,680 (£461,947) gross per month if he avoids any “political or religious propaganda that could damage the image and unity of the club”.

Having burst onto the scene at Santos, the Brazilian moved to Barcelona in 2013. After excelling at the Catalan giants for four years, Neymar signed for Paris Saint-Germain in a world record €222 million deal four years later.

According to an investigation by Spanish news outlet El Mundo which leaked the forward’s contract with Qatari owned PSG,  Neymar would receive €6,2 million (£5,28 million) a year as part of an ‘ethical clause’ included in his contract with the Parisian club.

Other rules Neymar must follow:

  • Do not speak negatively about the club, those who work in the club or the supporters.
  • Do not talk negatively about the club’s tactics.
  • Must show manners, kindness and accessibility for the supporters, which includes greeting and thanking the supporters before and after the match.
  • Behave exemplary, especially on the court in competition with teammates, opponents, referees and official delegates.
  • Attend in time for all trainings organised by the club.

The contract, which is dated 3 August 2017, has an expiration date of 30 June 2022. This is Neymar’s first contract with Paris Saint-Germain. The Brazilian superstar has since signed a renewal of the contract and El Mundo does not say whether these clauses have been continued.

The 29-year-old has previously made several references to his Christian faith. He grew up going to Peniel Baptist church in his native Sao Paulo. Lead pastor Newton Lobato revealed the footballer tithes around €18,000 every year.

Neymar once said: “Life only makes sense when our highest ideal is to serve Christ”.

He has also been seen receiving trophies wearing a headband stating “100% Jesus”, such as the Champions league final celebration in 2016 when F.C Barcelona claimed the title.

The Brazilian player is one of the best paid in the world. It is understood he receives around £465,000 a month without any bonuses included.
