Olympian shares faith in God

South African swimmer Tatjana Schoenmaker set a new record in women’s swimming and used her victory to point others to God.

Schoenmaker was set a new record in the women’s 200-meter breaststroke at 2:19.16. The 24-year old also broke records in the preliminary rounds; setting the time of 1:04.82 in the 100-meter breaststroke.

She ended up claiming the silver medal in the Monday event, Sportsnet reported.

In an Instagram post prior to the games, Schoenmaker wrote a prayer: “Father God, may Your will be done, may Your peace fill us up, may we praise You no matter what the outcome, may we be empowered by Your strength to give our all and may we forever be in awe of Your goodness! Thank You for bringing us to this very moment.”

Schoenmaker displayed her faith throughout the events. She wore two caps; a green one representing South Africa, and a second one with a blue Jesus Fish and “Soli Deo Gloria” (Latin for Glory to God Alone) printed on the side.
