Priests take on Covid duties

Some priests and seminarians from Kerala’s CMI congregation (Carmelites of Mary Immaculate) have taken on Covid carers’ roles, as India battles its second intense wave of the disease.

The group – which includes Fr Rafi Kadavil, Fr Naveen Chalisserry, Fr Sibi Kanjuthara, Br Milner Vithayathil, Br Jinu Vadakkethala and Br Clint Puthokaran – is caring for the Covid-afflicted people admitted in Amala Hospital, Thrissur.

The team dons PPE kits and devotes whole days to getting food and medications across to the patients.

Fr Julis Arackal CMI, the Director of the hospital, said the young men were role models for the society. They were not only caring for the spiritual needs of their flock, but also their physical needs.

The Catholic Church is the largest church in India, with over 19.9 million Catholics, who represent around 1.55% of the total population.

India continues to struggle with the worsening Covid-19 crisis and severe medical shortages.
