Transformers actor Shia LaBeouf has entered the Catholic Church this past weekend through the sacrament of confirmation.
The Catholic News Agency reported that the star, 37, was confirmed Sunday by Bishop Robert Barron of Winona-Rochester, Minnesota.
The actor had converted to Catholicism after filming Abel Ferrara’s ‘Padre Pio.’
LaBeouf’s confirmation took place Sunday at Old Mission Santa Inés Parish in Solvang, California.
LaBeouf’s confirmation sponsor Brother Alexander Rodriguez said that the actor wants to become a deacon “sometime in the future,” adding that LaBeouf was inspired to consider the diaconate while filming Abel Ferrara’s Padre Pio. In the 2020 biographical film, LaBeouf plays Padre Pio, an Italian priest who received the stigmata.
The Capuchin Fransiscans — Western America Province made the announcement on Tuesday.
“The Capuchin Franciscan friars are overjoyed to welcome him into the fold and witness his deep commitment to his faith journey,” the group wrote in a caption to their Instagram post.
The post itself shows three photos of the actor posing with priests and friars.
“Shia LaBeouf, known for his incredible talent and passion in the entertainment industry, has embarked on a profound spiritual journey that has led him to embrace the teachings of the Catholic Church,” the group wrote.
“His decision to fully enter the Church is a testament to his sincere desire to grow in his relationship with God and live out the Gospel values.”
