UK street preacher arrested

A pastor from north London has been arrested and later released for preaching outside the Uxbridge Underground.

Pastor John Sherwood was stopped by the police after complaints were made against him. Officers on patrol duty were flagged down by a member of the public who made them aware that a man was allegedly making homophobic comments close to Uxbridge tube station.

A video shared online shows Pastor Sherwood remonstrating with two police officers, before he is pulled away from a raised platform. He was taken away in handcuffs.

A spokesperson for the Met Police told media persons that at 13:35hrs on Friday, 23 April, a number of people approached the officers with concerns about the man’s language.

Officers spoke with the 71-year-old man and he was subsequently arrested on suspicion of an offence under Section 5 of the Public Order Act.

The Met Police confirmed that the pastor was taken to a west London police station where he was later released, under investigation.

A file has been passed on to the Crown Prosecution Service.
