Veteran actor Mamukoya dies

Malayalam actor Mamukoya passed away at a hospital in Kerala’s Kozhikode on Wednesday.

He breathed his last around 1.10 pm today due to a brain haemorrhage. He was 76 years old.

Mamukoya was hospitalised after collapsing during a football tournament in Kerala’s Malappuram. He apparently suffered a heart attack while attending the inauguration of the tournament and was rushed to a hospital in Vandoor and later moved to the ICU of another private hospital in Kozhikode. His condition had stabilised, but he later suffered a brain haemorrhage.

An Indian actor known for his work in Malayalam cinema, he has also appeared in the French film Flammens of Paradise. He has mostly appeared in humorous roles. His unique usage of the Mappila dialect and style marked his presence in the industry.

Mamukoya began his acting career in theatre in 1979. He has won two state awards. His award-winning performance in Perumazhakkalam (2004) proved that he can handle serious roles as well, with panache.

Kerala lost another popular actor Innocent recently.

The team of veteran stars and movie makers such as Sathyan Anthikkad, Nedumudi Venu, Oduvil Unnikrishnan, Sreenivasan, Jayaram, Mohan Lal and Mamukoya brought many memorable movies to the Malayalam screen.

Mamukoya’s character Gafoor and his dialogues now enjoy a cult following in Kerala. An animation series was later released based on this character.

He has acted in over 450 films. He was recently seen on the screen in Payali, Theerpu and in Chiyaan Vikram’s Tamil film Cobra.
