Ways to redo your home

You can transform your house into a home with any interior design style you choose, however there are two things to keep in mind – ensure it fits the home exterior and ensure the style is consistent throughout the house.

For instance, if you only recently went with a new home builder who set up a modern style for you, then it may look more cohesive if you go with a modern interior design. You can, however, incorporate traditional furniture and elements to make it feel more homely. It’s all about the combination.

Let’s take a closer look into the main styles.

Modern

When it comes to modern, think new. The new houses on the block are modern, but what takes modern to a whole new level is those you see on the rich list houses. This may be easier to imagine the interior design. Neutral colours, usually leaning towards black or white, with sleek, clean, crisp lines and glass, steel and metal.

It’s simple and fresh. If this aesthetic is your vibe then this is your best choice. Bear in mind, some modern interior designs look sterile and un-homely so be careful not to go too extreme. One way to avoid this is by adding warm paint colours, textures, rugs and hanging photos or art at eye-level as opposed to high-up.

English Country

This is my personal favourite. The reason being is that it’s warm, cosy and inviting. You simply can’t go wrong if you’re after a homely interior design. As the design style name suggests, its inspiration comes from English farmhouses, with an older yet functional feel. Furniture stores release styles that replicate this older look. A common feature is the white wooden furniture that has been sandpapered back to look pre-loved. This can also be easily done by purchasing thrifted items then painting and sand-papering, yourself.

Make sure you have a large, slouchy couch with a throw and cushion, rugs, and antique or older-looking wooden furniture. A fireplace will top it off. You can go for either lighter or darker colours – however, if you have a small space, it’s recommended to go for lighter colours to make the space look larger.

Industrial

The best way to imagine industrial is a New York apartment with an exposed brick interior with black steel beams. The reason New York apartments come to mind is due to the fact the industrial style is taken from old industrial buildings and industrial spaces which have been renovated into lofts.

It has now transformed into a style by choice, with people purposefully incorporating it into their homes all across the globe. To incorporate the style into houses, utilise salvaged materials and introduce stripped-back details such as exposed wood, brick and steel. Furniture pieces usually tend to include leather and steel materials.

Traditional

Inspired by the 18th and 19th centuries, traditional is timeless and is another style that is the epitome of comfort. It’s a classic look sporting dark wood and rich colours. Texture is a big element – with a range of fabrics to create depth and layering. It’s unarguably a maximist style – the opposite to minimalist due to the large amount of decor accessories and items.

You can play around with the traditional interior design style, mixing and matching as you wish. Utilise rich jewel tones and add silk or satin and velvet as well as scenic art with fake silver or gold frames.

Remind yourself along the journey to go with your gut. The majority of the time, people are drawn to a certain style. You may have always liked a modern, sleek look, or a traditional style. This still applies if this is new to you – the right style or styles you research should trigger a positive emotion in you. Can you imagine residing in this styled-home for 10 or 20 years? Then yes, it’s right for you.

The key to renovating your house on budget yet beautifully, is primarily to plan the entire process effectively.
