“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might” (Ecclesiastes 9:10)
Ever wish God would just dangle a heavenly map, like He did the sheet before Peter in Acts 10:13, with precise directions for the rest of your life?
I can’t count how many times I’ve asked God, “Please show me what you want me to do,” or listened empathetically to a friend as she moaned, “I keep wondering what God wants me to do with my life.”
It was in the midst of this quandary, doodling in the margins of my prayer journal, that the Holy Spirit pricked my heart with a very unscientific answer.
“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might,” Ecclesiastes 9:10.
The unsettling part of that verse is the phrase, “Whatever your hand finds to do”. That seems nebulous and rife with the opportunity to make mistakes.
The word “find” in the original language is ‘matsa’ and quite literally means “to come across, to encounter” even, “to guess”.
What if God’s will for me is less about whatever I find to do and more about how I do it? Specifically, with all my heart.
As I pondered this answer, God slowly lowered the more specific “map” I had requested.
He showed me, in no uncertain terms what He wants me to do with my life: “He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8)
Any career path, hobby or relationship can be pursued according these biblical directives.
I think I have my answer.
